With the introduction of “Jam,” a brand-new feature from Spotify, friends will now be able to create a single playlist on the platform and listen to it together in real-time. Whether they are in the same room or spread out across the globe, participants in a Jam session can add tracks to a shared queue that they can access. The industry leader in audio streaming is making the function available to both free and premium users, but only the latter will be allowed to launch a session and invite guests to participate as its host.
By choosing a song or playlist, premium users can start a group listening session by touching the speaker icon at the bottom of their screen or the three-dot menu at the top. Next, they can choose “Start a Jam.” As soon as the Spotify app is launched, housemates using the same Wi-Fi connection will instantly be asked to join and participate in the session. By having guests scan a QR code or share the link on social media, hosts can also invite guests from anywhere in the world.
While hosts will have the ability to rearrange the tracks and eliminate songs they feel don’t match a theme or vibe, Jam was built as a collaborative experience where participants may submit music to the playlist. Although it’s not obvious if this implies presenters will have the power to eject guests from the session, Spotify claims that they also get to choose who is included in the Jam. However, hosts can enable “Guest controls” to enable everyone to reorder the queue or remove music from it.
Starting today, Spotify Jam will be accessible worldwide, enabling all users to share the fun with their friends right away. The daylist on Spotify is perhaps more appealing to those who prefer to stream music on their own but still want to be able to find new songs and artists. Based on the type of music the user generally listens to, the new playlist that was introduced earlier this month changes throughout the day.
