YouTube has declared that it will implement additional measures in the upcoming months to counteract misinformation and abuse of AI. The new rules address deepfakes, a widespread problem, and transparency in films created using artificial intelligence. YouTube has made it “possible to request the removal of AI-generated or other synthetic or altered content that simulates an identifiable individual, including their face or voice.”
Through YouTube’s privacy request process, users can request that content be removed. However, the corporation will consider if the request is satirical or if the target is a well-known personality. In a similar vein, artists or their agents may also ask that any material that imitates their voice via artificial intelligence be taken down. The regulations are implemented at a time when deepfakes—like Civitai, which promotes sexualized recreations of powerful women—are being promoted and disseminated widely.
YouTube will remove any streamlining and ensure that any modified or synthesised content is identified as such. In the event that creators choose not to reveal this information, they may be subject to post removal, suspension from the YouTube Partner Programme, and other penalties. Before this new tool is released, YouTube says it will communicate with creators about how to use it. This will result in a large banner in the description for the viewer indicating that the content is “altered or synthetic,” along with a link to further information. YouTube may remove AI-generated films even with the appropriate labelling if the content is intentionally upsetting.
