Microsoft has started to roll out the Windows 11 2023 update (also known as version 23H2), which in addition to the AI-powered apps Copilot and other apps revealed in September, adds a few more minor features. “Didn’t Microsoft just release a major Windows 11 update?” is probably what you’re wondering now. You would also be right. However, it now appears that the September 26th release was essentially merely an AI preview intended for the Windows 11 22H2 update from the previous year. As a result, over the previous few weeks, Copilot didn’t really reach most Windows users (I eventually got it in a test laptop, but my main desktop is still without Copilot).
It makes sense to be perplexed—Microsoft’s approach to Copilot has been puzzling from the beginning. When we initially learned that it will be available in May, it was dubbed “Windows Copilot” and basically integrated the AI capabilities found on the Edge Copilot and other like products directly into Windows. At Microsoft’s most recent Surface event, Copilot emerged as the main attraction, with the company’s AI aspirations taking precedence over the device itself.
So make sure to start updating Windows Update if you’ve been itching to use Copilot. Furthermore, the integrated Chat app in Windows 11 2023 is changed to Microsoft Teams, which will by default reside in your task bar. Additionally, Windows 11 components can be found in the “All apps” part of the Start menu (which I don’t often visit these days) under a new “System” category. Additionally, those System Components will be located in the System area of the Settings app on a new page.
