Google is already establishing the schedule for the next two operating system updates, but Android users had to wait longer than normal for the arrival of Android 15 this fall. In contrast, the next significant Android release is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025.
In a blog post directed at developers, the company stated, “We’re planning the major release for Q2 rather than Q3 to better align with the schedule of device launches across our ecosystem, so more devices can get the major release of Android sooner.” For third-party phone manufacturers, who have traditionally had to wait many months to receive the most recent OS updates, this is wonderful news.
There will be a small Android upgrade scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025 in addition to the main release in the first half of the year. Next year, the only release with behavior changes that potentially affect apps will be the Q2 one. With a focus on “feature updates, optimizations, and bug fixes,” the smaller version scheduled for the end of the year won’t include any behavioral changes.
