Since phone numbers have been the core of the platform since its beginnings, the instant messaging program Signal is most recognized for its privacy-related options. However, until recently, there was no way to completely hide your own number. Signal revealed earlier today that, as an alternative to giving your phone number, you will soon be able to generate a distinctive username (which should not be confused with your profile name) that you may share with others via a link or QR code. As part of Signal’s anti-spoofing measures, you can change your unique username as frequently as you’d like, but it must finish in two or more digits. It is even possible to completely remove your username because it is an optional feature.
To join up for Signal, of course, you’ll still need a phone number, but take notice that by default, your number will no longer be available to everyone (you can manually modify this setting, if needed). Additionally, there will be a new feature that makes it impossible for someone to find you simply by your phone number; instead, they must know your precise, one-of-a-kind username. Put differently, individuals who possess your phone number may not be aware that you use Signal as well. This is advantageous if you would rather maintain your anonymity within the public groups on this platform.
Since you can’t instantaneously check usernames, scammers and spammers will ultimately figure out a way to take advantage of this function, just like with any new one. Pro tip: always confirm with new contacts you come across, preferably in person or at least over the phone, if you think they might be acquaintances. In a few weeks, these new Signal features should be available to you, or you can sample them now with the beta release.
